The small town of Colyton lies in East Devon some 5 kilometres from Seaton and nearly 10 kilometres from Axminster. It was an important agricultural centre and market town and once boasted its own racecourse situated on Pratt’s Hill. Racing first took place under the direction of East Devon Hunt on Wednesday 26th April 1865 when the feature steeplechase was won by Jessey. Meetings continued for the next 5 years until a final meeting under rules on Friday 22nd April 1870. East Devon did organise fixtures again with Heavitree in the 1880s.
